My Thoughts on 'My Everything'

'My Everything' 10th Anniversary Cover (2024)

'My Everything' is Ariana's second album which she released in 2014, and has recently celebrated its tenth anniversary. It was intended to be an "evolution" of 'Yours Truly' and contains tracks that are in my opinion more energetic and EDM than the previous album. The album goes through a story where Ariana is clearly struggling with her relationships. Despite there being so many songs out there with this theme, I find that her lyrics paint an interesting and unique story about her own experiences. What I like about this album is that you don't have to relate to the lyrics to enjoy the songs as they are very energetic and catchy. It is also a really nostalgic album for me as I listened to this pretty much all the time when I was in high school.

One of my favourite tracks from this album is 'Why Try'. I find that it gives a good backstory behind the lyrics of 'Break Free' (will be more on this later in the post!) which makes it so interesting to me. It goes through a story of where Ariana is caught in constant fights with someone, and her lyrics "now we're screamin' just to see who's louder" shows that her arguments don't contain anything constructive and that there's no effort to fix her relationship. However, her lyrics "I'm lovin' the pain, I never want to live without it" tells the listener that despite all the arguing, she doesn't feel like she wants to leave or change the situation. It is obvious that Ariana is still deeply in love with the one she is fighting with, making it hard for her to want to make a change.

The single 'Break Free' is a catchy and iconic EDM track with a staggering 940 million streams on Spotify! This song details how Ariana wishes to leave a toxic relationship that she's in. She has found out who her partner really is and suggests that her relationship with her partner is binding her or tying her down, hence why she wants to 'break free' from it. The song is extremely upbeat and empowering, showing that despite her struggles she has gotten a burst of confidence and courage to make the right decision for her. It also goes to show that leaving a toxic relationship should be something more people should have the courage to do. I heard the song when it released ten years ago and it is such an iconic song (with an even more iconic music video) that I can always sing along to!
